There are many reasons why someone can be arrested. The most common are being caught with illegal drugs, shoplifting or domestic violence. No matter what the reason for the arrest, unless it is punishable by the death penalty, they have the right to reasonable bail.
After someone is arrested, they are transported to a police station or county jail. There they will be finger printed, photographed and checked for any out standing arrest warrants.
Once the "booking" process has been completed, the "inmate" will be allowed to "post" bail. The defendant, a friend or family member will contact a bail agent to complete paperwork and pay the bail premium.
In California, bail agents usually charge 10% of the total bail amount. If ones bail is $10,000 they would pay $1,000 to the bail agent. That fee is non refundable.
The bail agent will then prepare the "bond" to give to the jail. Once the person has been released they will be informed of their court date. The defendant must appear for all required court dates until their case is completed.
Depending on the type and seriousness of the charges, an indivdual case can take 2 to 6 months or more to complete.
