There are many bail bond agencies in California and the United States as a whole. Many will advertise on the internet and list a local or toll free telephone number. How do you know who you are dealing with?
First look to see if they list an address for their office. Do they even have an office? Having an office does not automatically make one bail agency better than another. However, it shows that they are local and are committed to the local community and plan to stay in business for a long time.
Secondly, is their bail agent license number listed on the first page. The California Department of Insurance requires all bail agents to list their bail agent insurance license number on all advertisements. If there is no license number, they may not even be a California bail agency.
Third, is the bail agent you are talking to, rushing you to sign a bail contract? Are they more interested in how much money you can pay rather than explaining all your options? If they set up a payment plan, can you realistically afford the monthly payments?
Sometimes, it may be better not to bail out a defendant right away. Very often, the court can lower the bail or even release the defendant without having to post a bail bond, if the judge believes the defendant is a low risk of failing to appear.
Finally, can the bail agent explain the entire process from arrest to sentencing? Do they know how long it will take for the jail to release the defendant? Can they even tell you where the court is? What the normal court procedures are?
